Civil organisations continue to protest against liquor legalisation in Manipur

A sit-in protest was held in continuation of the protest by the civil organisations in Manipur against the move to legalise liquor in the state.

The Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA), All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) and Takhel Mamang Leikai Meira Paibi on Wednesday jointly staged a sit-in at Takhel Mamang Leikai, Imphal East District in protest the government’s move to partially legalise alcohol in the state.

The sit-in was held in continuation of the protest by the civil organisations in Manipur against the move to legalise liquor in the state, a decision taken on September 20, 2022 during a cabinet meeting.

Taking part in the protest, Takhel Mamang Leikai Meira Paibi pesident Pheiroijam Purnimasi condemned legalising liquor in Takhel area as it has become a threat to their peaceful neighbourhood. Alcohol abuse has increased to a great extent in the area and it will become worse as the panchayat election is at the door, she added.

The protesters appealed to the government to withdraw the legalisation and look into the problems faced by the women of the society.

Placards which read, “Stop alcohol legalisation in Manipur”, “Withdraw the Cabinet decision”, “Save the people of Manipur from Alcohol abuse”, were displayed during the protest.
