Hundreds of people from different nooks and corners of Tamenglong and Noney districts joined the Tamenglong Christmas Marathon with great joy and enthusiasm on Saturday under the theme “Run for Health”.
The first ever Tamenglong Christmas Marathon was organised by district administration in collaboration with Canara Bank, Tamenglong Beacons, Endurers, Tamenglong Times, The Gaanphiu Mail, Rain Forest Club, Adventure Club of Tamenglong, Duithan, Assam Rifles, etc under the banner of ‘Christmas Carnival’.
The Christmas Marathon was flagged off by 6 Assam Rifles commandant Colonel Aman Ahluwalia, SM as chief guest. The marathon had five categories including a fun run for kids, both male and female; as many as 500 runners participated in the marathon.
Addressing the participants, Colonel Aman Ahluwalia, SM wished them a Merry Christmas and informed that December 16 was Vijay Diwas wherein the Indian Army recalls the day they defeated Pakistani intruders into the country.
Interestingly, the youngest runner was a 4-year-old Chamcham Panmei while the oldest runner was 67-year-old Negouliu Panmei.
As part of the Christmas Carnival, as many as 18 stalls including food stalls, orange stalls and handicrafts are being opened at Mini Stadium Tamenglong Apollo ground organised by district administration in collaboration with Tamenglong Beacons. Orange sellers and buyers meet was also held as part of the Christmas carnival.
The event aims to provide orange growers a common platform to sell their oranges as the state level orange festival could not be held due this year to the unrest in the state. However, orange growers from far flung villages could not attend due to lack of incentive.
Deputy commissioner of Tamenglong L Angshim Dangshawa formally opened the stalls.
