Children below 19 must take deworming tablets: Health Minister

The second round of National Deworming Day was launched at Wangkhei High School, Imphal East on Tuesday.

Directorate of Health Services Manipur and State Health Society, National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur jointly launched the second round of National Deworming Day at Wangkhei High School, Imphal East on Tuesday.

Attending the function as chief guest, Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh said to keep a child healthy, preventing them from being infected by worms is a must. As children are the future pillar of the nation, every stakeholder should extend their best effort to administer deworming tablets, he added.

He also appreciated teachers and students of Wangkhei High School for their tireless effort in making their school one of the best government schools. He also drew the attention of concerned authorities to fill up any necessities of the school in time.

Health Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan said that the government used to observe so many health-related days with an objective to keep society healthy. However, it is of no use if people don’t follow the message spread on that particular day, he said.

He further said that children between the age of 1-19 should eat deworming tablets as per prescribed norm without fail. Any children infected by worms usually suffer from anaemia, loss of concentration, even loose bowel, etc.

Considering de-worming very essential, officials of all line departments like education, health and social welfare also attended the function.

NHM State nodal officer of Child Health Dr Shadhana Ningthoujam, said that The National Deworming Day is observed to create awareness about the importance of deworming, particularly for children from 1-19 years of age, who are the most vulnerable, to raise awareness on intestinal worms and attain complete eradication of Soil-Transmitted Helminths in children.

The state will target to cover all the children between the age of 1 to 19, she added.

During the function Education (S) director Laishram Nandakumar Singh; Health Services director Dr Khoiram Sasheekumar Mangang; Social Welfare director Ng Uttam Singh and NHM state mission director Dr Somorjit Ningombam attended as guests of honour.
