Purum Chumbang village in Chandel district has been facing water scarcity at its worst with village chairman KH Donhra Chothe calling on the concerned authorities of the state government to take up steps to help the villagers.
A team of media persons, accompanied by the members of the village authority, inspected the dry state of the Tumit River, the only source of water for the village and the condition of the water supply which is under construction by the government to provide drinking water in the village.
Speaking to the media, chairman Donhra Chothe said that the villagers had never before seen nor experienced the dry state of the Tumit River. The villagers have been using excavators to get water from the river by digging multiple holes in the river, he added.
The chairman further said that the two reservoirs, the construction of which was started on October 15, 2021 under the new development fund by PHED department are yet to be completed till date, and are for more than 500 villagers.
He appealed to the authorities concerned of the government to look into the construction process of the water supply and help in providing water to the villagers who have been facing water scarcity even for the basic uses. He also expressed the need to provide Tubewell or handpumps in the village for long term use.
Responding to media queries, Kh Donhra Chothe also appealed to the horticulture department and forest department to provide saplings to the villagers to plant trees and fruits in the open land at the boundary of the village to increase the financial condition of the villagers.
