Centre constitutes Peace Committee in Manipur

The Peace Committee in Manipur has been constituted under the chairpersonship of Manipur governor.

A Peace Committee has been set up in Manipur to facilitate the peace-making process among various ethnic groups in Manipur and help bring normalcy back to the strife-torn state.  

As the unrest continues to prevail in the state for more than a month now, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday announced the formation of the Peace Committee which is to be headed by Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey.

The Committee is being constituted to help establish peace, social and communal harmony among various ethnic groups and promote a sense of security in the general public.

The committee includes the chief minister, ministers of the Manipur government, Members of Parliament, MLAs and leaders from different political parties as members. 

The members are chief minister N Biren Singh, minister Y Khemchand, minister Nemcha Kipgen, minister Awangbou Newmai, MP Lorho S Pfoze, BJP state president Sarda Devi, JDU MLA Md Abdul Nashir, CPI secretary M Nara, Congress MLA K Ranjit and NPP MLA T Shanti. 

Former DGP P  Doungel, retired Lt general K Himalaya Singh, professor W Nabakumar, retired IFS Khamsuang, retired Col Ng Sitlou, Jitendra Ningombam of COCOMI, Ajang Khongsai of Kuki Inpi Manipur, L Nganbi of AMKIL, David Shimray of Tangkhul Naga Long, Hrila Hmar of Hmar Tribe Council are also members of the committee. 

Other members of the committee are Kho John of United Naga Council, K Suanthang of Paite Tribe Council, L Memchoubi of Porei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, John K Ngaihte of Zomi Council, Y Leirik Leima of KANGLAMEI, Durga Prasad Sharma of Gorkha Samaj Seva Samiti, Ph Nando Luwang of AMUCO, SM Jalal of AMMOCOC, Md Rajauddin, Manipur Muslim Council Moreh among others.

Earlier during union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state, he announced that the Peace Committee will be headed by the governor and it will comprise members of CSOs and all sections of the state.
