The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against seven accused persons in connection with looting of arms and ammunition from 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), Narenseina, in Bishnupur District on August 3, 2023.
The CBI filed the chargesheet before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro), Guwahati (Assam). The seven accused have been identified as Laishram Prem Singh; Khumukcham Dhiren, alias Thapkpa; Moirangthem Anand Singh; Athokpam Kajit, alias Kishorjit; Loukrakpam Michael Mangangcha, alias Michael; Konthoujam Romojit Meitei, alias Romojit and Keisham Johnson, alias Johnson.
The CBI registered the instant case on August 24 and took over the investigation of the FIR dated August 3 registered at Moirang Police Station following notifications issued by the Government of Manipur and subsequently by the Government of India under DSPE Act, 1946.
As alleged in the FIR, on August 3, a large number of armed miscreants and individuals looted around 300 arms, around 19800 ammunitions and around 800 types of munitions and other accessories from two rooms of Battalion headquarters Kote inside Quarter Guard, 2-IRB, Naranseina.
Further investigation against other suspects involved in looting of arms and ammunition and other aspects is continuing.
It may be recalled that an irate mob stormed the 2nd IRB headquarters, Naranseina in Bishnupur district around 11 pm on January 18 demanding arms. Following the incident, the CRPF allegedly fired shots in which five individuals including Rohit were injured. The other 4 individuals are still undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity.
One of the five individuals who sustained injuries in a firing incident at 2nd IRB Headquarters in Naranseina on January 18, succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased individual has been identified as 21-year-old Pebam Rohit, alias Sana, son of P Chitaranjan from Thinungei. He breathed his last at Raj Medicity in the wee hours around 3 am on January 20. Moirang police shifted the body to RIMS mortuary for post mortem. The body was later handed over to his family members on January 26 for performing last rites.
