A BJP worker was reportedly shot at and wounded on Wednesday night by a Manipur Police commando constable who is said to be a supporter of the National People’s Party (NPP). The sister of the victim was also attacked by the NNP supporters, family said.
According to the family of the victim, who has been identified as Md Shahabuddin (44), S/o (L) Nizamuddin of Kiymge Takhok Makha Leikai, the incident happened on Wednesday night around 8:30 pm when the victim, along with his two friends were returning from JNIMS after visiting a relative there.
The incident took place at Kyamgei Takhok Makha, which is about 5 km from Irilbung Police Station in Imphal East district.
The victim, along with his two friends, identified as Md Bahauddin (35), S/o Ayajuddin of Takhok Makha Leikai and Md Abdul Rajak (30), S/o Abdul Salam of Takhok Makha Leikai were returning from JNIMS in his brother’s KIA car when they were stopped by the NPP supporters at the entrance of Kiymgei Takhok Makha Leikai.
They escaped from the first group but were again stopped by NPP supporters at Kiymgei Takhok Makha Leikai who told them to get money from the residence of BJP Candidate L Rameshwor and threatened them. However, when the three told the NPP supporters that they had not come from Rameshwor’s house but from JNIMS, they were attacked with sticks, the family said. And when they tried to escape in the vehicle, they were shot at which hit Shahabuddin in the right thigh.
Hearing the incident, Shahabuddin’s sister Rahamtun Bibi (38) came out of the house, but unfortunately, she was also attacked with a stick, the family said. Both the victims have been admitted to Raj Medicity by Irilbung PS OC Paojalung.
According to the family, the person who shot Shahbuddin has been identified as Md Rakibuddin (35), S/o (L) Tomba of Kiymgei Muslim Awang Leikai Salam. He is a Manipur Police Commando of the Thoubal district with his posting at Waroiching, the family added.
The documents and key of the car, belonging to Md Moshiluddin, brother of the victim, has been snatched by Sangomshangbam Boicha, S/o (L) Yusuf of Kiyamgei Awang Leikai, along with the victim’s phone, the family said.
A case has been filed at Irilbung PS and an empty case of 9mm bullet has also been found, the family said.
