Manipur Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded legal action against president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), K Meghachandra, for interfering in an investigation in connection with the seizure of narcotics drugs from commando personnel on January 16.

Manipur BJP spokesperson, Johnson Elangbam, said on Sunday the untimely visit of Meghachandra at Kakching police station can give psychological pressure to the investigating officer of the case. An FIR can be filed against him for organising a press conference in the premises of the police station without the permission of the concerned SP, he added.

He can go to congratulate and encourage the police personnel of the station for the big achievement on seizing narcotic drugs from the possession of commando personnel. However, instead of congratulating the police personnel he went to the station with an intention similar to investigation which could demoralise the investigating officer and other police personnel when similar cases occur in future, said Johnson.

The Indian National Congress is one of the oldest political parties and a state president of the party creating such an issue is beyond imagination, said the spokesperson.

Vice president of the state BJP, Ch Chidananda Singh, said the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign of the BJP government is not a drama or politics but it is above politics as the campaign was launched to eradicate drugs from the soil of Manipur.

He said playing cheap politics on ‘War on Drugs’ in order to get political mileage is unfortunate.

Chidananda questioned, “Who is the advisor of Meghachandra? The people of Manipur want an answer to why he went to Kakching police station. Was it to give hindrance in investigation or to give psychological pressure?”

It seems like Congress party has forgotten its own history, Chidananda said, adding that during its tenure 28 cases were registered in connection with drug related issues where police personnel were involved. Did the former Congress government hand over those cases to the CBI, he questioned further.

He said instead of playing cheap politics each and every individual should support the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign as it was launched to make Manipur drug-free irrespective of political parties, communities, caste or creed.
