Manipur Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS) Minister Govindas Konthoujam on Thursday asserted that it is now crucial to hand over the chairmanship of the unified command to the chief minister as he has better knowledge about the regions in Manipur.

He was speaking to the media on the sidelines of the wreath laying ceremony of state force personnel W Somorjit at the 1st MR Manipur Police Memorial.

“A person from Manipur who understands the nuances and issues will be better suited to take reins of the unified command,” he said.

Wangkhem Somorjit was a 6th IRB personnel attached to the Special Commando stationed at Moreh. He was gunned down at Moreh by Kuki militants on Tuesday.

He further condemned the inhumane onslaught of the Kuki narco terrorists against state forces stationed at Moreh.

“Moreh was and still is a vital region for Manipur and its people; therefore, the demand of the 10 Kuki MLAs to remove the state forces who are manning the border town is totally outrageous,” he said.

He maintained that the attack was carried out with sophisticated weaponry used in wars and battles.

He stated that more arms and ammunition along with additional personnel were sent in on Thursday morning to rein in the security measures in Moreh.

The Ministry of Home Affairs approved the deployment, he added.

He further stated that the objective of the 10 Kuki MLAs was to destroy and fracture Manipur which will not happen as the remaining MLAs are there to protect the integrity of Manipur.
