Normal life was crippled across Thoubal and Kakching districts on Tuesday, following the 48-hour state-wide bandh called by various clubs and organisations demanding the unconditional release of five village volunteers who were arrested by Manipur Police.
Bandh supporters blocked roads in various areas across the districts. Womenfolk and meira paibis came out in large numbers and blocked Heirok Wangjing road. Khongjom Circle meira paibis also joined the protest and blocked the road near Khongjom market.
Similar situation was also witnessed at Khekman, Leisangthem, Thoudam, where meira paibis of various localities in the areas took to the streets and blocked vehicular movement. Apunba Meira Paibi Lup of Yairipok Khoirom Mayai Leikai also extended solidarity to the bandh.
Womenfolk of Kakching, Sekmaijin, Hiyanglam and various areas of Kakching district also blocked roads in support of the bandh.
Meanwhile, roads passing through Uchiwa leirak achouba, mayai leikei, Mayang Imphal Konchak, Mayang Imphal Market etc. in Imphal West were also blocked by protesting womenfolk of the areas.
Meira paibis taking part in the protest condemned the arrest of the five village volunteers who were returning back after guard duty by Manipur police.
Protesters demanded immediate unconditional release of the arrested persons and asserted that no FIRs should be filed against them.
‘Meirapaibis will extend solidarity and support to the initiatives taken by the public’, they said.
