The Economic Task Force has put an indefinite ban on importing farm chicken for meat in Manipur from June 2; however, chicks, processed chicken feed and egg will be allowed as earlier.

In a press note on Saturday, the Economic Task Force stated that due to the low price of imported farm chicken for meat, many chicken farmers in Manipur are not able to make profit as they have to sell their chicken at similar rates in order to beat the price of imported chickens.

To solve the issue of local chicken farmers and to promote them, the Economic Task Force took the initiatives, it added.

The initiatives of the economic task force will encourage the local farmers and will help in promoting the poultry farming sector in Manipur.

It further stated that transporters and business owners who are selling chicken imported from outside the state must stop with immediate effect from June 2. It also appealed to the people to take initiatives in manufacturing chicken feed in Manipur in order to become self-reliant.

People should support while building a self-reliant economy under economic nationalism campaigns. And the big business owners who have been importing chicken from outside the state should cooperate with the campaign, it stated.

Earlier, the state had also faced a similar issue on importing ice-packed fish from outside the state.

Despite the ban of importing ice-packed fish by some organisations, ice-packed fishes are still available in the market due to the high rate consumption and low production rate in Manipur.

The similar scenario might be faced in the case of ban on importing chicken.
