Stating that City police personnel beating a woman street vendor, accusing her of stealing money without verification is totally against the law, the Pangal Street Vendor Association have questioned as to how the police personnel, who are to protect people, have beaten the woman who was selling banana at Khwairamband Keithel, Thangal Bazar without verification.
Addressing the media on Friday at AMMOCOC head office located at Hatta, advisor of the association, Anwari Nurjahan, drawing the attention of the chief minister, called for suspension or termination of the police personnel who committed the crime on November 8 at around 3.30 pm.
It is alleged that the street vendor stole money but without verifying it, the police personnel beat her and this act is a violation of human rights. Even a killer is not beaten without thorough verification or investigation as the killer has the right to dignity too, she said.
The woman street vendor, Apabi, is from Lilong Meirenkhul and she sells bananas at Khwairamband Keithel for her family livelihood. Police personnel of City Police Station beat her as if she were a criminal, Nurjahan said and questioned if detaining her forcibly at the police station, beating her and then releasing her after three hours is part of the law or not.
She even mentioned that there were related incidents such as beating or torturing of street vendors but it has stopped. However, it appeals to have started again, she said and appealed to the chief minister to look into the matter and take necessary action.
