The All Yairipok Local Truck Sintha Association has banned quarrying activities at the stretch of Thoubal River at Yairipok from Wednesday.
The association, in a release, alleged that most of the time, it is the powerful and people with connections who are extracting stones and sand from the riverbed by using heavy machineries and vehicles.
The common people and villagers, residing near the river, are oftentimes harassed by police for quarrying in the riverbed. However, the government officials turned a blind eye when those powerful people came to quarry at the river, it alleged.
The release further said that the ban will continue till the government issues a clarification and come clean over the matter.
It also cautioned that those found quarrying by disregarding the ban will have to bear their own responsibility if any untoward incident occurred.
