Arambam Samarendra to be commemorated on 24th death anniversary

Arambam Samarendra was a polymath, excelling in various creative endeavors. He distinguished himself as a story writer of Shumang Kumhei, stage play, and ‘Matamgi Manipur’, a Manipuri film released on April 9, 1972.

The Manipur’s Patriotic Writers Forum (PAWF) is gearing up to commemorate the 24th death anniversary of the writer Arambam Samarendra at Nungshikol Park under Lamlai assembly constituency in Imphal East at 9.10 am on Monday.

President of the forum Naoroibam Khamba Luwang will attend the event, which will include paying of tributes to Arambam Samarendra, stated a release.

It is worth noting that Arambam Samarendra tragically lost his life to assailants who opened fire during a public address he was delivering on June 10, 2000. Since 2008, the forum has annually observed this solemn day to honour his contributions and unwavering dedication, it added.

His talent was recognised with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1995 for his work, ‘Leipaklei,’ a collection of dramas. Born on July 12, 1935, Arambam Samarendra not only left an indelible mark in the realms of literature and theater but also championed social reform and fostered Manipuri nationalism.
