On behalf of DG Assam Rifles, Headquarters IGAR (South) paid tributes to subedar major Kharka Bahadur Limbu, Ashoka Chakra, Military Cross, of 8 Assam Rifles on 26 April at Mantripukhri, Imphal, stated a release issued by IGAR (South) on Tuesday.
Officers of Assam Rifles interacted with the family members of the braveheart and remembered his supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation, it stated.
It mentioned that Subedar major Limbu hailed from Mantripukhri and had joined Assam Rifles on December 5 1929. He saw action in World War II and was awarded the Military Cross for his extraordinary courage and bravery. On April 26, 1961, in a counter insurgency operation in Naga Hills, subedar major Limbu laid down his life while combating insurgents. In a fierce close-quarter firefight, the brave soldier neutralised two insurgents but was grievously wounded and succumbed to his injuries, it added.
For his exceptional courage, fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice, subedar major Limbu was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, the nation’s highest peacetime gallantry award, it stated.
He was the first soldier from Manipur to be awarded with the Ashoka Chakra, it added.
Meanwhile, Mantripukhri Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR(S) organised a medical camp cum community service at Sawombung, Imphal East district on April 25.
In continuation with the efforts of Assam Rifles to reach out a helping hand for the local population and assist them in humanitarian aid, a medical camp was organised, it stated. The medical officer from Assam Rifles conducted a health checkup and educated the local populace to follow preventive measures against resurgence of COVID-19.
A total of 164 villagers benefited from medical camp, it stated. Masks and medicines were also distributed to the beneficiaries at the end.
I(n the meantime, Churachandpur Battalion under the aegis of IGAR (S) organised a friendly volleyball match with local youths of Parbung village, Pherzawl district on Tuesday.
The volleyball match was organised under the theme ‘Fighting Drugs Through Sports’ to promote sports as a tool to fight drug menace in the region, it stated.
The event was also used as a platform to identify talent in the field of sports for recruitment in Armed Forces, it mentioned.
