AR pays homage to Major Bob Khathing

Major Khathing holds a special place in the history of Arunachal Pradesh, where he served as the Assistant Political Officer in the erstwhile NEFA, the IGAR (South) stated.

Assam Rifles paid homage to the iconic figure of the Northeast, Major Bob Khathing, Padmashree, MC, MBE at Imphal on the occasion of his 112th birth anniversary, stated a release issued by IGAR (South) on Thursday.

The ceremony was attended by John Khathing, son of Major Bob Khathing and other important dignitaries, both military and civil, it stated.

It mentioned that Major Bob Khathing, Padma Shree, MC, MBE, is a legendary figure hailing from the Northeast region. He served with distinction in the famous ‘V Force’ during World War II and received accolades such as the Military Cross and Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his exceptional bravery. In addition to his dedicated service during the devastating earthquake of 1950 in Assam, Major Khathing played pivotal roles in the transitional phases of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Sikkim, it mentioned.

It stated that Major Khathing holds a special place in the history of Arunachal Pradesh, where he served as the Assistant Political Officer in the erstwhile NEFA. He also made history by being the first officer to ceremoniously unfurl the Indian Tricolor at Tawang in 1951. In recognition of his immense contributions to the North East region, he was honored with the Padma Shree by the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad, in 1957.

During a brief speech, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), recalled Major Bob Khathing’s invaluable contributions to the erstwhile NEFA and his overall efforts towards maintaining peace and security in North East India, it mentioned.

It further stated that the IG AR(S) expressed gratitude to the family members of the esteemed hero for gracing the occasion and emphasized the significance of acknowledging the contributions of individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping the dynamic and constantly evolving landscape of the North East.

As a gesture of appreciation, a felicitation ceremony was organised by the Khathing family during the event to honor Thangkhul students who secured top positions in Class X and XII board examinations across various streams. Cash prizes and certificates were distributed to a total of 05 students during the function, it added.
