The Assam Rifles on Saturday handed over five ‘misguided’ Manipuri youths, including a 17-year-old minor, to their respective families; these youths were recently rescued from the perilous Indo-Myanmar border region.
The handover ceremony, held at the IGAR South headquarters in Mantripukhri, Imphal, was presided over by Major General Ravroop Singh.
According to IGAR (South), these youths were recruited less than a year ago under false pretenses and promises. Upon their arrival at the insurgent camps, they were subjected to harsh living conditions and relegated to performing menial tasks. The deteriorating situation was further exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between the Myanmar Army and various rebel forces, significantly endangering their lives. This critical state of affairs compelled the youths to escape in search of safety and a chance to return to a normal life.
Major General Ravroop Singh, while addressing the gathering, credited the successful rescue mission to the parents of the youths.
He acknowledged their unwavering efforts and emotional appeal, which played a crucial role in convincing their children to abandon the insurgent path and return to mainstream society.
The major general emphasised the importance of familial support in such situations and urged all parents whose children might have been similarly misled to reach out and encourage their wards to come back home.
He further assured that the Assam Rifles remain committed to facilitating the safe return of misguided youths. “We are always ready to support and assist those who wish to reintegrate into society and lead a peaceful life,” Major General Singh stated.
