National People’s Party (NPP) national president Conrad K Sangma on Sunday said he will not point fingers at anyone in connection with the firing incident at Andro which resulted in the injury of the party candidate’s father.
Sangma, who is also Meghalaya Chief Minister, was speaking at the flag hoisting programme of Kshetrigao NPP candidate Sheikh Noorul Hassan.
“Let the facts and truth come out. It will be improper to make allegations without proof”, said Sangma. Let the police investigate and apprehend the accused, however, he personally made a complaint to the chief election commission and an official complaint was also made to the chief electoral officer, Manipur, he added.
Sangma even urged the commission to provide efficient security for candidates so that such incidents don’t reoccur.
“I have never seen so much of this happening in the past election. It is not really healthy in terms of democratic set-up”, said Sangma.
Serious steps should be taken up for free and fair elections, as well as to take off the worry and fear of the public, he said.
The NPP chief said he is not here in Manipur to compare the state with Meghalaya. Each state is different, each state needs to work in different ways and the NPP is doing the best for the people of each state, he added.
Sangma said his party faced lots of issues and challenges in the last five years, which were very difficult, even then NPP is stuck with the coalition.
A coalition is a system where all the parties are required to build trust, to carry people along with consultation of everybody. But the last five years have been very difficult, Sangma said.
Sangma expressed his confidence that NPP Kshetrigao candidate Noorul Hassan will win with a high margin.
He said the supporters of NPP candidates have grown considerably in every constituency with the increasing numbers of threats, intimidation, attacks to party candidates, workers.
Nevertheless, this intimidation and violence will not deter NPP and its supporters from campaigning, he maintained.
The flag hoisting ceremony was also attended by deputy CM, Y Joykumar and other leaders of the NPP.
