After 21 years, court convicts man for rape

A man in Imphal West charged with the crime of raping an 11-year-old girl in 2001 has been convicted.

Additional Session Judge, Fast Track Court (FTC) for Crime Against Women, Manipur on Monday convicted a man in a case of raping a minor girl in 2001 at Lamshang under section 376 IPC.

The convict, Usham Roben, son of Usham Nabachandra of Taothong Ayungba, Imphal West district, was convicted for raping a minor girl of 11 years at the time of incident that occurred in August 2001.

The case was registered as a suo-moto FIR on August 15, 2001 under Lamshang PS under section 376 IPC.

The IO of the case submitted the charge sheet against the accused on February 28, 2002 with prima facie evidence of offence under section 376 of rape.

The court during the hearing considered that the accused had sexual intercourse with minor was proved and established beyond reasonable doubt. And, the accused has not produced any evidence despite the opportunity given for his defence.

Accordingly, the court announced conviction of Usham Roben of offence under section 376 IPC.

It may be mentioned that the case was taken up by the Additional Session Judge, Fast Track Court in 2018. Earlier, the case was at Session Judge, Imphal West.
