99th birth anniversary of poet Leitanthem Ram observed

Leitanthem Ram was one of the early writers of Manipuri literature from Kakching.

The 99th Birth Anniversary of poet Leitanthem Ram Singh was jointly organised by Kabi Leitanthem Ram Singh Memorial Trust Thoual along with the Manipuri department of YK College Wangjing on Wednesday.

The programme commenced with an offering of floral tribute to Leitanthem Ram Singh. The programme was attended by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal District president Moirangthem Rajendra as the chief guest, Thoubaojam Khomdon as the president and YK College Wangjing principal Soibam Giri as the guest of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, associate professor of Manipur department Kha Manipur College Kakching T Kunjeshore recalled the life and achievements of Leitanthem Ram Singh. Yumnam Uttambala who is a research scholar at Dhanamanjuri (DM) University, spoke on the different books written by Ram Singh.

It can be mentioned that Leitanthem Ram Singh was born in 1923 at Thoubal Wangmataba. He was one of the early writers of Manipuri literature from Kakching. He was an avid enthusiast of theatre and sanskriti as well.

Ram Singh also worked for the education of women and girl children. He played important roles in establishing many educational institutions including Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School (previously known as the Thoubal High school), Keinya Girls High School (previously known as Thoubal Girls High School), L Kanhai LP School also known as Thoubal Girls LP School, and the Thoubal college.
Ram Singh had written four epic stories including the ‘Jat Onba’ as well as two poetry books.
