On February 8, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Central Government has decided to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar to ensure the internal security of the country and maintain the demographic structure of India’s Northeast states. It was also announced on February 6, that the government will construct a fence along the entire Indo-Myanmar border.

Raising concern on the issues of illegal immigration in the strife-torn state of Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh posted on X earlier on Monday, stating that there is an unnatural growth of 996 news villages in the state due to illegal immigration.
