The Suicide Prevention Day 2022 themed ‘Creating hope through action’ was organised by District Health Society (DHS) and District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Chandel at Anallon Christian Institute, Chandel.
The programme was attended by chief medical officer, Chandel Serthani Serbum as the chief guest, District Hospital Chandel medical superintendent Joysin Mathew Monsang as the president and Anallon Christian Higher Secondary School Chandel principal L Wolring took part as the guest of honour along with 100 students of class XI and XII along with their teachers.
As part of the occasion, an on-spot quiz programme for the students was also organised, followed by the prize distribution by the dais members.
District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Chandel coordinator M Sushilkumar gave the keynote address and stated that 1.64 lakh people committed suicide in India in 2021 with about 450 suicides per day. In Manipur, around 44 people committed suicide in 2020 and 29 people committed suicide in 2021, he informed.
Resource person DMHP Chandel district nodal officer Kh Robindro emphasised on the various mental health issues which may lead to suicide including the use of alcohol and substance abuse etc.
The speakers of the programme spoke on the importance of seeking immediate help if one suspects having mental health issues.
