Meira Paibis on vigil at Yairipok Khoirom Mathak Leilai Handpump Makhong in Thoubal district set ablaze as many as 200 bags of ‘phanek’ and ‘lungis’, wrap-around worn by women and men, seized from a truck on Sunday.
The womenfolk seized a loaded Tata truck bearing registration number MN07C-2564 while checking at Yairipok-Kasom Khullen road under Yairipok Police Station in Thoubal district around 11.30 am on Saturday.
The driver-cum owner of the truck was identified as one Md Riyaj Shah, 27, son of Md Heshamuddin from Yairipok Heitroipokpi and the two individuals who are in charge of the items are Thangjam Romen, 49, son of late Tomba and Longjam Premjit, 37, son of late Mangoljao.
Clubs, meira paibis, gram panchayats and zilla parishads of Yairipok held a meeting regarding the seized items. The three people allegedly tried to illegally export the items towards the Indo-Myanmar border. People of Yairipok gave them an ultimatum till 9 am of Sunday to identify the real owner of the seized items.
As per sources, the items were set ablaze near Yairipok Khoirom Mathak Leilai Handpump Makhong by the Meira Paibis as they failed to identify the owner of the items, while the three people were let off after a warning.
