A team of Churachandpur police on Thursday arrested a 56 year-old man and seized a huge quantity of suspected opium and opium seeds from his possession at K Salemphai village in Churachandpur district.
According to police sources, the Churachandpur police received a tip-off that a huge quantity of contraband opium was stored at the residence of one Jampao Haokip, 56, son of late Jamkhothang Haokip from Mongneljang village, Senapati district, presently residing at K Salemphai village in Churachandpur district.
A team of Churachandpur police led by OC inspector N Thangzumuan and SI Zairemthang rushed to his residence at K Salemphai village and made a requisition to the Churachandpur district magistrate to depute one executive magistrate to oversee the house search, the sources said.
The police said Tuibuong sub-divisional magistrate Jangminlen Lupho arrived at the spot and the house search began.
During the search operation of the house, the team found 2.216 kg of suspected opium packed separately in an Everyday milk powder package weighing 866 grams and another packet packed in a white polythene weighing 1350 grams along with 4.40 kg of suspected poppy seed packed in a black cloth, it stated.
The team seized the suspected items around 9.50 am and in the presence of Tuibuong SDM and civil witnesses and arrested Jampao Haokip, the police said.
A case under FIR No 30(3)2023 CCP-PS u/s 18(c) NDPS Act has been registered for investigation while the arrested person was remanded to police custody till March 23, 2023 for further investigation, it added.
