The 15th fortnight barrier free campaign, 2022, was launched on Monday under the theme "All the ways possible" at the Medical Directorate.
The programme is organised by Handicapped Development Foundation with an objective to remove any kind of barriers faced by differently-abled persons that hinders in bringing inclusive development.
Addressing the function as chief guest, additional director (PH) of directorate of Health Service Y Gopalkrishna Singh said that people should not side-lined differently-abled persons. Though they are physically challenged, they are blessed with extraordinary qualities, he added.
He further said that until and unless discriminations against differently-able persons are stopped, they will not be able to enjoy their life and rights fully. The life of differently-abled persons also matters in order to bring equal development in the society, he added.
At any time, even a normal person can become disabled because of an accident or heart stroke etc, he said, while stating that it is high time to create a differently-abled friendly environment.
Chairman of Handicapped Development Foundation, Sapam Jashobanta, said that with the rising of awareness on proper treatment against person with disability (PWD), discrimination against this second of society has been gradually reducing.
He further said that the government had implemented an act for PWD to bring inclusive development and to become a responsible citizen. Yet due to low accessibility, many PWD are still unable to utilize their own potential. There are high expectations that all forms of barriers faced by PWD would surely be removed from society, he stated.
