135 arrested for curfew violation, arson, theft in violence-hit Manipur

The Manipur Police and Central forces on Sunday busted 12 bunkers in various districts of both hill and valley and recovered various sophisticated explosives during combing operations conducted in several districts of the state.

As many as 135 persons have been arrested in connection with curfew violation, theft in abandoned houses and arson cases till date, official sources said.

“Manipur police have arrested 135 persons in connection with curfew violations, theft in abandoned houses and arson cases, etc,” the Manipur Police Control Room said on Sunday.

According to the statement issued by the Manipur Police Control Room on Sunday, the state police and Central forces have been conducting routine patrolling, flag marches, and cordon and search operations in vulnerable areas since the outbreak of violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in several districts of the state on May 3.

In view of the devastating incident, including massive arson cases, indefinite curfew has been imposed in the state since 7 pm of May 3 and internet services suspended since May 4.

The state also witnessed several cases of theft in abandoned houses, as violence victims fled to safer places.

However, apart from some sporadic incidents in some places, the situation is normal in most districts, the Manipur Police said in the statement issued on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the State Police and Central forces on Sunday busted 12 bunkers in various districts of both hill and valley and recovered various sophisticated explosives during combing operations conducted in several districts of the state.

The statement by the Manipur Police Control Room stated that search operations were conducted in Tamenglong, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kangpokjpi, Churachandpur, and Kakching districts.

Security forces also recovered three 51mm and 84 mortar shells each from a paddy field at Sahumphai Village and one improvised explosive device (IED) from a paddy filed between Kangvai and S Kotlian Village, it said. The recovered mortar shells and IED were demolished at the spot by the state bomb disposal team, it added.

A total of 1,100 arms, 13,702 ammunition and 250 bombs of different kinds have been recovered till date, it mentioned. 

The Manipur Police appealed to the general public to extend all possible help in bringing normalcy in the state, to clarify any rumour by dialing rumour free number - 9233522822 of Central Control room, and to return and deposit arms, ammunition, and explosives to the police or security forces immediately.
