Presidential Elections 2022: Voting underway to elect 15th President of India

Voting for the Presidential election 2022 is underway across the country. The 16th Presidential election will decide the fate of NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu and the Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. The polling to elect the 15th President of India that began at 10 am at the Parliament House and the state legislative assemblies will continue till 5pm Monday, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, chief ministers, including Manipur CM N Biren Singh and other MPs and MLAs have cast their votes.

"Voted in the 2022 Presidential elections," PM Modi tweeted along with a photo of him casting his vote.

Former PM Manmohan Singh also cast his vote at the Parliament House.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also tweeted that he has cast his vote for the Presidential election, 2022.

The ECI had appointed 37 Observers from among senior IAS officers holding the rank of additional secretary and joint secretary in the ministries to oversee the arrangements of polling and counting of the election.

The counting of votes will take place on July 21 and the new President will take oath on July 25, as per the ECI schedule.

It may be mentioned that NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu, if elected, will be the first tribal woman to become the President of India.

In the 2017 election, Ram Nath Kovind defeated Opposition candidate Meira Kumar to become the 14th President of India.
