Jagdeep Dhankhar was on Thursday sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India and Chairman of Rajya Sabha.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of Office of Vice President of India to Dhankhar at a Swearing-in-Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday (August 11, 2022).
Dhankhar took the oath in Hindi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi among others. A renowned lawyer, Dhankhar was also West Bengal governor from 2019–2022.
M Venkaiah Naidu, his predecessor, was among the dignitaries present at the brief swearing-in ceremony.
The vice presidential elections was conducted on August 6 and the result was annouced the same day.
Dhankar emerged victorious by securing 528 votes out of the 725 MP votes from the lower and upper houses polled. All India Trinamool Congress abstained from the election with only two members voting.
Dhankar won the 2022 vice-presidential election with 72.8 per cent votes and recorded a highest poll-victory margin since the 1992 election.
Prior to the oath-taking, Dhankhar visited Rajghat on Thursday morning and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi ji.
“Felt blessed, inspired and motivated to be ever in service of Bharat in serene sublimity of Raj Ghat while paying respects to Pujya Bapu,” he tweeted.
Dhankhar also extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan 2022.
