Amid the clarion call to drop celebration of festivals by CSOs and women groups in Manipur, thousands of devotees on Sunday thronged the Hiyangthang Lairembi Laishang at Imphal West to offer prayers on the occasion of ‘Bor Numit” which falls on the second day of Durga Puja.
Devotees swarmed the Hiyanthang Lairembi Laishang from the wee hours of Sunday which continued late into the night.
State police personnel and Manipur Red Cross Society volunteers were deployed to prevent any untoward incidents and guide the devotees.
Several cabinet ministers of the state also visited the holy site to offer their prayers.
Several volunteers informed that the crowd turn-up this year was more than last year.
Interacting with the media on the sidelines, a woman belonging to the Kabui community stated that she had come to offer prayers as she followed the indigenous religion.
“Many have turned to Christianity but some of us still follow the indigenous faith. So, we came to offer our prayers,” she said.
She also wished the auspicious occasion ushers in peace and tranquillity in Manipur.
Various rituals in connection with the auspicious occasion were also performed in the evening with performance of ritual songs and pung cholom.
Several devotees wished the occasion would usher normalcy and improve cordial relations between different communities in Manipur.
