Student bodies demand upgrading of MUC into central university

Six student bodies of Manipur on Tuesday drew the attention of the state government to urge the Union government for upgrading the Manipur University of Culture (MUC) into a fully-fledged central university.

The six student bodies are All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU); Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpang Lup (AIMS); Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM); Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA); Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) and Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK).

Manipur being a diverse state and a gateway to Southeast Asia has been a hub for cultural connectivity since the past many decades, stated a joint release issued by the six student bodies.

It stated that the cultural elements of Southeast Asian countries and Hindu culture have been syncretised with the indigenous culture of Manipur and as a result, different unique culture and tradition can also be witnessed in the state.

Manipur has been giving a big contribution to the world on performing arts, sports and culture, it stated. It further stressed on the need to open different departments in the MUC to research on the various indigenous arts, cultures, languages and scripts.
