The Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) has objected to the allotment of university quarters to people who have no affiliation to the university and extension of the resident quarters inside the varsity.

MUSU president Moirangthem Boby Singh said in a release that George Thangkholal Haokip, who is currently staying at the university quarter no. 47, Type-4 (Block-7), has no relation or affiliation to the university.

George, an assistant professor at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, was arrested by a team of Lamphel police on November 23 for giving sensitive comments in social media regarding the destruction of poppy fields at Churachandpur, the release stated.

How the Manipur University House Allotment Committee has allotted a quarter to an individual who is in no way related to the university? MUSU questioned in the release.

It further said that similar incidents had occurred in the past and recently a bogus resident of the university quarter had also been tested COVID-19 positive.

The union has appealed to the authority concerned to stop allotment of quarters to the people who have no affiliation to the university.

MUSU will continue to monitor such incidents in the future so that the reputation of the university is not affected and make the regular residents of the university quarters have their space peacefully, it added.
