The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) alleged that the Directorate of University and Higher Secondary is withdrawing from its duty of investigating Ningombam Shitaljit Singh for malpractice on becoming the principal-in-charge of Naorem Birahari College, Imphal.

Addressing the press on Friday at DESAM office, its secretary general Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei said that it has been a year the student body urged the state government and directorate of university and higher secondary education to conduct enquiry against Ningombam Shitaljit, a teacher of Naorem Birahari College. However, there has been no enquiry report till date, he said.

Appealing to the state government and the Directorate of University and Higher Secondary Education to disclose the report of the enquiry to the public, DESAM questioned the competence of the education department of the government, accusing it of not functioning and holding on to the inquiry for a year without any report.

If the concerned authorities failed to act on their request, DESAM is ready for further protests in order to retain the sacred title of being a teacher for the future, Somorjit said.

He said the enquiry was set up against Ningombam Shitaljit Singh on December 23, 2021 by the Directorate of University and Higher Education and was suspended after DESAM had appealed to the education minister to take up disciplinary action against the teacher, as he had joined the college as a temporary Physics teacher in 1996 and had completed his M. Sc in Physics in 1997.

A year has passed but there has been no report of the inquiry to the public, the DESAM secretary said.

He mentioned that earlier on June 20, 2022, DESAM submitted a written application to the director and commissioner of the Directorate of University and Higher Secondary Education and to the education minister and also a memorandum to the chief minister on September 23, 2022, to disclose the report of the enquiry to the public.

If the authorities do not disclose the enquiry report in public, then, DESAM will follow with agitation for the sake of future, he said.
