The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) on Thursday appealed to the state government to reconsider the allocation of examination centres for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for students from Manipur in light of the present unrest.
The student body urged the authorities to provide the exam centres within Manipur itself as travelling outside the state for the CUET exam may pose significant challenges for students.
Speaking to the media at DESAM office, Imphal, DESAM secretary general Nongthombam Thoithoiba highlighted the potential difficulties which students may face in appearing exams outside Manipur amidst the ongoing violence in Manipur.
He drew the attention of the chief minister of Manipur, the state’s education minister, and the Union minister of state for education to look into the issue and relocate the examination centres for the welfare of Manipuri students.
“The examination may incur substantial expenses for students including costly travel and accommodation. For many families, this will present a mammoth financial strain,” he said.
He noted that traveling by road amidst the on-going communal conflict was perilous and presented an unacceptable risk to students’ safety.
He informed that a memorandum had been formally submitted to the chief minister, the education minister, and the Union minister of state for Education and added that DESAM will continue to take feasible actions regarding the matter.
