Two new Omicron cases detected in Maharashtra; India's tally rises to 23

Maharashtra has reported 10 cases of Omicron variant so far.

India's Omicron tally rose to 23 as two more cases were detected in Maharashtra on Monday. With these two new positive cases, the total number of Omicron variant in Maharashtra reached 10, the state government said.

On Sunday, India reported 17 new cases of Omicron variant - nine in Jaipur, seven in Maharashtra and one in Delhi.

The two new Omicron cases were detected from a 37-year-old man who returned from South Africa and his wife  who returned from the US, the state government said.

In India, the first two cases of Omicron variant were reported in Karnataka on December 2.  

The Omicron variant, first reported in South Africa, was announced as a 'Variant of Concern" by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on November 26.
