India's COVID-19 tally crossed the eight lakh-mark with the highest single-day spike of 27,114 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry's latest data.
The total confirmed COVID-19 cases in India now stand at 8,20,916. The number includes 2,83,407 active cases and 5,15,386 recovered cases. The country witnessed 519 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 22,123, the Union Health Ministry data shows.
Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state with 2,83,461 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,30,261 cases and Delhi with 1,09,140 cases.
India is the third worst-hit nation by the coronavirus pandemic preceded by Brazil are and the US.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said that as many as 1,13,07,002 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till July 10 of which 2,82,511 samples were tested on Friday.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has lauded the efforts taken to break the chain of coronavirus transmission in Mumbai’s Dharavi, among other countries while saying that only aggressive action combined with national unity and global solidarity can turn the pandemic around.
"There are many examples from around the world that have shown that even if the #COVID19 outbreak is very intense, it can still be brought back under control," the WHO tweeted on Friday.
In Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Korea and even in Dharavi, a densely packed area in Mumbai, a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking the chains of transmission and suppressing the virus, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
The novel coronavirus has killed at least 562,889 people across the world. As many as 12,631,067 people have been infected by the virus globally, according to the latest data by worldometers.
