The 27th International Day of Action for River with the theme of ‘Water for All’ was observed on Thursday at Saihenjang Village, Churachandpur, organised by Rural Womens Upliftment Society (RWSU) and Highlanders in association with Saihenjang Youth CLUB. The observance witnessed the participants taking a ‘Pledge to save Rivers to provide water for all’.
The occasion was graced as guest of honour by assistant secretary of vision Lamka, Laldotlien Tusing and as functional president by vice president of SDP, Edward Darngaw apart from dignitaries of RWUS, Highlander and Vision Lamka. The occasion also witnessed presentation of mementos to Saihenjang Youth Club by the Project Co Ordinator of RWUS, Melody Zote.
In her keynote address, RWUS secretary Mary Bath spoke about the importance of water which is one of the core components of the universe. She thanked the chief of Saihenjang Village, H Doungel for hosting the programme, calling him one of the most important Environmentalists and exponents of cleaning the river in Churachandpur District with the Tuitha River flowing past their village which had been cleaned regularly.
The RWUS and Highlander had been regularly observing the International Day of Action for River in Churachandpur where they organised plantations near river banks, mass cleaning of river bed with like minded organisations including different women organisations of Churachandpur. However, it was not held this year due to the present crisis in Manipur.
The International Day of Action for Rivers is a platform to advocate for the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of rivers. Each year, on March 14, environmentalists, communities and policy makers unite to organize the vital role of rivers in sustaining ecosystems , biodiversity and human livelihood
