The poetry collection, ‘Yachangba Nang Hallo’ written by Manipuri writer Sorokhaibam Gambhini has been named among the books selected for receiving the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award, 2023 to be given by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.
She will be receiving the award in the category of Manipuri language. S Gambhini hails from Tripura. She is the daughter of late Surachandra Sinha and Mala Sinha.
Gambhini has completed her MA in Sanskrit and Kuvid in Hindi. She is currently employed as a warden of PG Womens Hostel, Tripura University in Tripura. She is married to Binode Kumar Sinha.
She is fluent in Manipuri and Bangla and has been working in the field of literature as a poet, a critic and a translator. Gambhini is the second person among the Manipuri writers from outside the state to receive the literary award. The first Manipuri diaspora writer to be honored by the award was Naorem Bidyasagar in 2014, for his work ‘Khungganggi amasung Refugee’ that was published in 2011.
Gambhini’s ‘Yachangba Nang Hallo’ was published in 2018. Gambhini had earlier published another poetry book titled, ‘Hanglak- kanu Wahang Adu’ in 2001. So far, she has written as many as 5 books which include poetry collections and short stories in Manipuri.
Her poems have been translated in English, Gujarati etc. and published in national and international journals. She had proactively worked with various literary groups in Tripura. She had been conferred with various awards by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Tripura, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam, etc.
Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Imphal has also honored her with the ‘Kamini Kumar Gold Medal’ in 2010. The jury members for the Sahitya Akademi Award in Manipuri are L Birendrakumar sharma, Dr Kangabam Memton Devi and Dr Waikhom Romesh.
