International Mother Language Day observed in Manipur

Attendees of the ‘International Mother Language Day’ at Manipur Press Club in Imphal West unanimously resolved to urge the state government to enable candidates to take the UPSC exam Manipuri paper in Meitei Mayek.

Manipur joined the rest of the world in observing ‘International Mother Language Day’ with an event jointly organised by AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIMS at Manipur Press Club in Imphal West district.

During the event, the attendees unanimously resolved to urge the state government to enable candidates to take the UPSC exam Manipuri paper in Meitei Mayek. They resolved to appeal for the formulation of the Manipuri State Language Policy as well as the establishment of a State Language Commission.

The students’ organisations also appealed for the formation of a Transliteration Committee to transliterate the reference books of the Manipuri paper for Higher Education. The organisations also condemned the state government’s negligence in the development of education in Meitei Mayek.

Meanwhile, an ‘International Mother Language Day’ event themed ‘Eikhoi Imalol Ngangsi, Eikhoigi Shaktam Kansi’ (Let's speak in our mother tongue, Let's promote our identity) jointly organised by LIPUL, PUYA, IKAL and MPPL was also held at Sekta Mayai Leikai Community Hall, Imphal East. 
 
Literary organisations of Thoubal and Kakching District also joined in observing International Mother Language Day 2023 on Tuesday.
 
The Khorirol Sandoklup Wangjing, The Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal district branch and The Ningol Khut Manipur, Wangjing jointly observed the day at Khorirol Sanglen Wangjing.
 
This year’s observation was dedicated to renowned poet and educationalist late Sambanduram Nandakishor from Wangjing by paying floral tribute to the portrait of the late poet.
 
As a part of the event, two books, 'Wari Macha Kamdouna Egani' (How to write a short  story), a book on criticism written by Bhorot Sanasam and 'Asi Leibakta Asibasing' (Corpse in the land of Dead) a book of poetry written by Laishram Jugeshor, were released. Renowned critic and principal of Imphal College, M Priyobarta, talked about the second book. 
 
 
Later,  a symposium on the topic 'Manipuri Lol gi maram da khradang' ( A view on Manipuri Language) was held where Tongbram Babulan was the speaker. A review of the book  'Shree Hari gi Sayon Tara' written by late Sambanduram Nandakishor was presented by Shaikhom Chaoba. 
 
The Khorirol Sandoklup Wangjing, The Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal district branch and Ningol Khut Manipur, Wangjing also jointly published a memoir on International Mother Language Day.
 
In the second session of the event, a poets meet chaired by renowned poet Nahakpam Biren was also conducted and more than 30 poets read out their poetry.
 
Khorirol Sandoklup Wangjing presidemt Tongbram Babulan, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal district branch president M Rajendra, and Ningol Khut Manipur vice president Y Iseihenbi devi attended the event as presidium members.
 
Meanwhile, Sahitya Seva Samiti Kakching also observed the day at Kakching Sumak leikai leirak achouba pareng.
 
Naorem Nopur, proprietor, Bhubon Brick Field, Kakching, Kshetri Bira, president, Sahitya Seva Samiti Kakching and Naorem Chaoba, Head, department of chemistry, Kha Manipur College Kakching attended the event as presidium members.
 
Literary lovers and other people attended the event.
