Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the occasion of Independence Day 2022 celebration announced that his government will withdraw one lakh minor cases, including several pending cases related to objectionable social media posts.
The chief minister was addressing the state during the 26th Indian Independence Day celebration event organised in Guwahati.
Assam has a total of 400,000 pending cases. Withdrawing the minor cases would reduce the burden on the judiciary and help focus on celaring serious crime cases, he said.
In his I-Day speech, the chief minister also paid homage to freedom fighters of the state who laid down their lives in India’s freedom struggle.
The chief minister also announced setting up of 15,000 Anganwadi centres for children’s welfare.
"We are initiating a new scheme for flood mitigation via utilisation of water bodies. We will provide pattas to people residing in VGR lands for more than a generation and in lands with annual pattas. We are also setting up 15,000 Anganwadi centres for children’s welfare".
And, as part of the efforts to boost the education sector, ₹10,000 crore will be provided for improving infrastructure in all government high and higher secondary schools of Assam, he said.
"We are also taking steps for augmenting green power generation in our State," he added.
Sarma invited secessionist groups to come for discussions and aid in Assam's development journey, saying that the exuberant celebrations in the past few days have shown that people consider Assam to be an integral and inalienable part of India since time immemorial.
"The exuberant celebrations of the past few days have shown secessionist groups that people consider Assam to be an integral & inalienable part of Bharat since time immemorial. I urge the secessionist groups to come for discussions and aid in Assam's development journey," Sarma said in his I-Day speech.
The chief minister also said that Assam's SHGs have sold 42 lakh flags and people have spent around Rs 17 crore for procuring flags as part of Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.
