'Students must participate in preserving dying art forms'

Prof. N Aruna, Dean, School of Humanities, Manipur University, lamented the degeneration of various performing art forms of Manipur.

A two-day workshop on “Manipuri Performing Art” organized by the Department of Dance and Music, Manipur University was launched on Wednesday at its department.

Attending the function as chief guest, Prof. N Aruna, Dean, School of Humanities, Manipur University, lamented the degeneration of various performing art forms of Manipur.

Noting the significance and historical aspects of various indigenous art forms of Manipur, she urged everyone, especially the youths and students to work earnestly on preserving such dying art forms.

Head in-charge of Department of Dance and Music, Manipur University, Dr. P. Lilabati Devi similarly observed the importance of safeguarding one’s culture and performing art forms and conveyed that the workshop is conducted for this purpose.

She acknowledged the contributions of various Gurus in propagating the rich Manipuri performing art forms and encouraged the students to follow their path. She further acknowledged that the workshop is to be held successfully through the advice and suggestion of Gurus, members of the department who are collectively working towards preservation of Manipuri Performing arts.

Prof S Mangi Singh, Dean, School of Social Sciences, Manipur University also attended the function as guest of honour.

In technical session, Sangeet Natak Akademy Awardee, Th.Chaotombi Singh presented a paper on “Dance Choreography” and Kala Bhusan, A Birbabu Singh on “Lairik haiba-thiba”.

On second day of workshop, secretary, Folk Ensemble Manipur, M Rajen Meetei will present a paper on “The details of Pena” and Sangeet Natak Akademy Awardee, A Amusana Devi on “Manipuri Classical Solo Dance”.
