With the aim to encourage women visual artistes of Manipur, the Arts Society Manipur (ASM) on Monday organised a five-day-long “2nd State Level Women Artistes Workshop” at Manipur Ensemble Complex, Langthabal in Imphal West.
Delivering the keynote address of the inaugural function, ASM vice-president Th Heramani pointed out that the numbers of women practicing visual arts are low compared to the numbers of women practicing other art forms.
He said, the contribution of women in visual arts in the state is still below five per cent, though the numbers have increased in the last five-ten years.
Leaving the profession after marriage due to being engaged in other household activities, despite having love for visual art forms is one of the factors of low involvement of women in visual art, he contended.
The workshop is being organised as a part of ASM mission to encourage women, who are profound in visual arts and to increase the participation of Manipur women in the visual art, said the vice-president.
He added that the ASM is planning to move a step forward in the upcoming days by ways of organising exhibitions and more academic discourse exclusively for women visual artists of Manipur.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by director of Manipur Ensemble Kshetri Jugindro as chief guest while ASM president Th Debendra Singh presided over the function.
The first state-level workshop held in December last, was participated by as many as 21 women; however the second state-level workshop which was kicked-off on Monday was participated by only 11 women.
