Earthquake of 5.3 magnitude jolts Mizoram, houses damaged

The tremor that damaged several structures and caused cracks in roads at several places of the state was also felt in Aizawl.

An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude jolted Mizoram early Monday morning, causing damage to properties, but there were no reports of casualties, according to reports.

The state Geology and Mineral Resource department said that the earthquake that occurred early Monday caused damage to several houses and buildings, including a church at Zokhawthar in Khawbunga in Champhai district of the state. The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained, it said.

The tremor was also felt at Aizawl and other parts of the state, and caused cracks on roads at several places.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the epicentre of the earthquake was located at Zokhawthar in Champhai district on the India-Myanmar border. The depth of the quake was 20 km while the coordinates of the epicentre are 23.22 (latitude) and 93.24 (longitude), it said.

This is the third earthquake reported in the state in the past few days. On Sunday, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit the state at 4.10 pm, and on June 18, another 4.6 magnitude quake was felt.
