The North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) on Monday submitted a memorandum to Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ regarding the problems faced by the Manipur University community, for taking into consideration an urgent resolution.
The lack of a regular VC has led to ad-hoc functioning of the university administration and is the cause of great anxiety for the university community, stated a release issued on Monday. Moreover, there is the issue of unjustified fee being levied from the students, it stated.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no physical classes have been conducted during the past year, it stated adding even the exams have not been conducted in the physical mode and assessment has been done only through online assignments.
NEFIS stated that levying an examination fee for the second semester for which assessment has been done only through assignments, is unjustified. Also, due to widespread suffering and loss of jobs during the pandemic, a large section of students coming from marginalised backgrounds is unable to pay fees, and is being unduly put under duress with unjustified fees, it added.
NEFIS in the memorandum submitted to the education minister demanded appointment of a regular vice chancellor from among the university academics, and putting an end to the ad-hoc manner in which the university is functioning, it stated.
NEFIS also demanded that unjustified levying of fees from the students should be stopped, and fees should be refunded to those who have already paid it. NEFIS would be intensifying its movement if its demands are not met immediately, it added.
