Manipur gets Centre's nod to build world-class polo ground in Imphal East

The DoNER Ministry has given its approval for construction of a world-class polo ground at the birth place of modern polo (Ipudhou Marjing Khubham) at Heingang in Imphal East, Manipur Tourism director W Ibohal said Friday.

The official was speaking to the media during the inauguration of a stairway to Ipudhou Marjing Khubham on Friday. It was organised by Ipudhou Marjing Khubham Kanba Lup (IMKHUKAL).

Ibohal said that the state government has been working full swing to convert the surrounding areas of Ipudhou Marjing Khubham as a world-class tourist destination.

Pointing out that the only polo stadium in Manipur at Mapal Kangjeibung does not meet international standards, he explained that there is no buffer zone (an extra space outside the boundary) in it.

The director said that 23 acres land has been reserved for the construction of the polo ground. Once it is officially approved, the construction work will be started without any delay, he added.

As it has been accepted that the mighty Ipudhou Marjing had invented the modern polo, a 68 feet tall statue of the polo player along with the horse are presently being installed atop Ipudhou Marjing Hill, he said.

The installation of the polo player is almost completed and installation work of the horse is going on, he said. He also highlighted the various initiatives taken by the state government such as construction of eco-tourist lodge, cafeteria, multipurpose hall, view towers and other public utilities to make Ipudhou Marjing site a world-class tourist destination.

Ibohal further said that the government is also carrying out an expansion works of the roads leading to Ipudhou Marjing site, as the volume of visitors is increasing seemingly.

N Ongbi Hiyanu, who is the wife of Chief Minister N Biren, while delivering the chief guest speech, said that the location is a very important spiritual site for the people of Manipur.

As it is going to be a world-class tourist destination, she expressed the need of maintaining cleanliness and making it a eco-friendly zone.

The function was also attended by pradhan of Heingang GP K Jayanta Singh as president.
