Chongkhu, a black-crowned night heron was rescued and released into its natural habitat in Thoubal district by Joint Co-ordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity (JCCWB) on Friday.

The night heron was rescued by a resident of Khangabok Leipat Leikai when it flew into a wall at the said area. After it was handed over to Leipat Citizens Club, the club informed the JCCWB. After the rescuers nurtured the bird for 24 hours, it was released to its natural habitat.

The bird releasing event was attended by Moirang Palli Post sub inspector Sh Tomchou and team, along with Leipat Citizens Club, Khangabok.

Speaking on the occasion, JCCWB convenor Romesh Ningthoujam said that the black-crowned night heron is a bird that hunts for food during the night.

As its natural habitats are slowly diminishing owing to human activities, such naturally reclusive birds have started to stray into human settlements, he added.

He further said that the natural ecological sites of the state are suffering owing to human influence. He urged the authorities concerned to act promptly to save such depleting ecological sites.

Urging the people to release any rescued wildlife which wandered into human settlements, he said if the animal seems to be in weak condition, inform the nearest forest and wildlife club or organisation.
