Advance flock of Amur falcon arrives in Manipur's Tamenglong

Tamenglong district magistrate L Anshim Dangshawa issued a prohibitory notification, asking all citizens to deposit air-guns.

After traveling thousands of miles from South Africa, a first advance flock of Amur Falcon, locally known as ‘Akhuaipuina’ arrived on Friday in Tamenglong district.

The guest migratory birds will stay at several roosting sites till the end of November. With the arrival of the guests, Tamenglong district magistrate L Anshim Dangshawa issued a prohibitory notification, asking all citizens to deposit air-guns.

The notification stated that hunting, killing, destruction of wildlife (including migratory birds Amur Falcon (Falco Amurensis) in any way for food or possession or otherwise is a punishable offense under sections 50 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The district magistrate ordered for imposing a total ban on hunting, catching, killing and selling of Amur Falcon by anyone in the district and nearby surrounding areas with immediate effect.

The migratory birds usually arrive in many parts of Tamenglong District and bordering areas from second week of October and are likely to roost till the end of November, 2023, and this period is considered crucial in the life cycle of Amur Falcons, he stated.

He ordered all to deposit the air guns in the district to their respective village authorities office.

The district magistrate also listed 37 villages including Chiuluan, Khangchiuluan, Duigailong, Tamenglong Khunjao, Tamenglong town, Bamgaijang, Taijijang, Zeiladjang, Azuram, Thiulon, Vanchengphai, Akhui, Sangrungpang, Tabanglong, Keikao, Sempang, Duiluan, Matung, Puching, Phallong, Sonram, Dailong, Lenglong, Konphung, Dikiuram, Katang, Nheng, Ndai, Maruangpa, Namtiram, Namtiram-2, Nheng, Dikiuram, Konphung, Renglong, Guangram, Raengkhung, Taobam to immediately deposit air guns.

Report of the collection of the air guns is to be submitted by October 15 and anyone found wilfully violating these prohibitory orders is liable to face consequences as per the Law of the land, he added.

Tamenglong forest division ranger officer Joel Gangmei told the media persons that India is among the countries which has signed to protect migratory species of wild animals.

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, also known as the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) or the Bonn Convention, is an international agreement that aims to conserve migratory species  throughout their ranges, he said.

The agreement was signed under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme and is concerned with conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale.

He appealed to the district magistrate to strictly follow the prohibitory order with letter and spirit in order to give full protection of the migratory birds Amur Falcon.

He fervently urged all the citizens of Tamenglong and Noney district to give full support and cooperation with the district magistrate to give full protection of Amur Falcon.
