WhatsApp has updated its privacy policy and terms of service and made it mandatory for its users to share their data with its parent company - Facebook.

The instant messaging app started informing its users through in-app notifications about its updated privacy policy on Tuesday, stating that the user must accept it to continue using WhatsApp. The popular messaging app has published its new privacy policy making February 8, 2021 as its deadline.

The app notification mentions key updates, including how the company processes user data, how businesses can use Facebook hosted services to store and manage their WhatsApp chats and how it partners with Facebook to offer integrations across the Facebook Company Product.

WhatsApp users will be required to accept the terms and policies to continue using the instant messaging app. WhatsApp accounts of users who do not accept the new conditions and policy will no longer be accessible post February 8. Simply put, users have time till February 8, 2021 to accept the new policy or lose their WhatsApp account.

"Earlier respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA as part of WhatsApp privacy policy but those lines are no longer part of the new privacy policy," the company said, while adding that WhatsApp will share user's data with Facebook and an user have no choice but to share your data with company parent Facebook.

The information WhatsAppt will share with Facebook companies includes the phone number for your WhatsApp account, profile name and photo, who’ve been communicating with, and transaction data, battery level, signal strength, app version, browser information, mobile network, connection information, language and time zone, IP address, device operation information and identifiers, including identifiers unique to Facebook Company Products associated with the same device or account.

“We share your information to help us operate, provide, improve, understand, customize, support, and market our services," WhatsApp stated in its privacy policy.

"The new privacy policy is mainly focused on business messaging practices. Especially, the updated policy is designed to address messaging a business over WhatsApp. Facebook is going to give businesses the option to use Facebook’s secure hosting infrastructure to host WhatsApp chats if they don’t wish to store the messages over their own systems, WhatsApp added.
