We have known ancient scourges such as malaria, yellow fever, tuberculosis, plague, leprosy, polio and flu etc. Malaria and TB are now dangerous re-emerging infectious diseases. Over the last several decades, many new infectious diseases have cropped up. These are often referred to as emerging infectious diseases (EIDs).
