A five-day ultimatum has been served to the Manipur government over the Asian Highway expansion issue and threatened to impose a 48-hour total shutdown in Kangpokpi district.
Highway projects are always bogged down by land compensation issues and harassment from militant groups.
A joint meeting was held on Tuesday between the government officials led by the Commissioner (Revenue) and senior police officials and affected residents of the land acquisition for expansion of NH-2.
The resolution of the meeting was allegedly drafted by the revenue commissioner and it was never circulated to the representatives and was obtained after a few weeks of the meeting, claimed AHLAVCCA and TSA Sadar Hills.
District administration Kangpokpi in the presence of Kangpokpi assembly constituency MLA Nemcha Kipgen held a joint meeting with representatives of all stakeholders in connection with the Asian Highway expansion issue along the NH-2 at Conference Hall, DC office Kangpokpi on Thursday.
The Asian Highway Land Affected Chairmen/Chiefs Association decided to call off the total shutdown following an assurance from the Chief Minister’s Office and the local MLA Kangpokpi assembly constituency Nemcha Kipgen.
Discontent with the dealing of various land issues in the district by the government and especially in connection with highway expansion along NH-2 in Kangpokpi district, village chiefs, and chairmen of Kangpokpi district formed a committee called ‘Kangpokpi District Chiefs Joint Coordination Committee on Land Matters’ to examine and protect their lands.
The ‘Asian Highway Land Affected Villages Chairmen/Chiefs' Association (Gamgiphai to Taphou Kuki)’ secretary Semson Kipgen said that it is with deep regret to witness the incessant disturbing situation on the proposed widening, expansion, maintenance, management, and operation of National Highway 2.
While conducting inspection of the development works of the Asian Highway (NH-102), the MP advised the officials of NHIDCL to take up the work progressively.
