As many as 43 athletes from Manipur are all set to compete in total nine events at the upcoming 19th Asian Games 2023 which is to be held from September 19 at Hangzhou, China.
India will be sending a total 634 athletes to compete in 38 events of which 43 are from Manipur.
The athletes from Manipur will compete in nine sports, including Hockey (M&W), Football (M&W), Sepak Takraw (M&W), Canoe & Kayaking (M&W), Wushu (M&W), Cycling (M), Rowing (W), Judo (W) and Weight Lifting (W).
Football has the highest number of players from the state, comprising 13 players, including six in men and seven in women. Sepak Takraw has nine players, including five in men. Hockey has three players in Nilakanta Sharma, Sushila Devi and Bichu Devi.
In the Canoe and Kayaking event, there are seven players including three women while Wushu have three players, two players each in Rowing, Cycling, Weightlifting including Mirabai Chanu Saikhom and a lone woman in Judo viz., Indubala Devi Maibam.
Cricket, Football and Volleyball events will mark the initial start of the much awaited XIX Asian Games 2023 from September 19 at Hangzhou, China.
However, the official opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games will be performed at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Expo Centre on September 23, 2023 and the closing ceremony is slated for October 8.
The prestigious games was originally scheduled to take place from September 10-25, 2022 but got postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic. Forty-five countries from the Olympic Council of Asia will compete in sixty-one disciplines from forty sports.
The sports event are Aquatic, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Breakdancing, Canoeing, Cricket, Cycling, Dragon Boat, Equestrian, Fencing, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Gymnastic, Handball, Judo, Kabaddi, Martial Arts, Mind Sports, Modern Pentathlon, Roller Sports, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing, Sepak Takraw, Shooting, Sports Climbing, Squash, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Wushu.
